Boardgames in Blighty Kickstarter News -Pirate Shipwreck is live!

Arrrggghhh ye swabs! Thar’s a new pirate-themed game off the port bow in the Kickstarter Sea.

This one looks like a fun game for the family and gamers alike and its all about securing treasure from a shipwreck and preventing other players from doing the same. In the midst of all of that, you will be dealing with hazards so it sounds like you will have lots to challenges to deal with to win.

From the project –

Brave changing currents, perilous hazards, and the threat of attack from other pirates to salvage treasure from the shipwreck!

Disaster struck a pirate ship laden with treasure. Wrecked on rocks in the middle of an archipelago of islands, the pirates scattered to nearby islands on makeshift rafts. With the pirates on each island rising against the other islands to claim the treasure, you can train further pirates from your island’s indigenous population and build rafts to navigate to and from the shipwreck. When navigating, you will follow currents, anchor, or bribe your pirates to paddle harder and deviate from the direction of the current. You will contend with various hazards including whirlpools, sharks and storms, attack other players, stealing their treasure and try protecting your own treasure. The winner is the player to get the most treasure back to their island.

Pirate Shipwreck is a relatively light-hearted or family game for two, three, or four players. Regular gamers told us they enjoy playing the game as an opener to gaming evenings. Families also enjoy the game – adult players can scale the intensity of play to suit the age of children, whilst helping develop their spatial, communication and imagination skills.

The good news is free shipping to all EU countries, the USA, and Canada. Shipping elsewhere is subsidised to the same extent with additional costs indicated by Kickstarter.

Boardgames in Blighty Kickstarter News – The Ragnar Brothers have updated Backpacks & Blisters

One of the great things about living in the UK is being able to go for walks or go “rambling” in the countryside which is pretty spectacular, especially the further north you go, like for instance in the Lake District.

I had no idea that my buds, the Ragnar Brothers had a game about rambling and as soon as I saw that they had updated it and launched a Kickstarter, I had to back it.

The staggering beauty of the English Lake District has been inspiration to poets, artists, novelists and philosophers. Backpacks and blisters is a strategic movement game with players spending a day rambling amongst mountains, woods, lakes streams and waterfalls, all captured in the delightful artwork of Marco Primo.

bb3

Starting in the morning, each rambler sets off from the market town of Keswick with a pound in their pocket and four walking cards in their hand. Money can be used to buy chocolate or refreshments, bus rides or ferry trips. However the real work of the day is on foot, uphill and down dale. Blisters and the heavy rucksack can hinder and at lunch and then tea-time, the number of cards in hand is reduced.

All ramblers need to be back in Keswick before six pm … if not, call Mountain Rescue!

As the Lake District bids to become a world heritage site, Ragnar Brothers invite your support on Kickstarter in producing this great game and help celebrate this corner of paradise.

Boardgames in Blighty Kickstarter News – War of the Nine Realms is live!

Boardgames in Blighty Kickstarter News – War of the Nine Realms is live!

For a while, I thought that Vikings were the new Zombies in board games on kickstarter. It seems to have died down somewhat, which is a good thing for Wotan Games who have come along with a down and dirty skirmish game called War of the 9 Realms.

This game, like others, has the Viking Gods fighting it out.

From the project page –

The Mighty Clash of the Norse Realms, meeting in a final epic fight for total supremacy of all the Nine Realms.

A modular tile based skirmish game steeped in Norse Mythology, where the Realms pit their finest against each other in a bid to claim total victory. Each realm is comprised of unique characters from Norse lore with wondrous abilities, and a choice of Heroic or Epic play styles which allow you to choose between raw power, or tactical advantage, as you immerse yourself into a battle of fabled proportion.

Realms 2
The different sides of the Realm cards give you two unique sets of Characters to compete with.  The Heroic version is more straight forward in the abilities but harder hitting, the Epic version adds lots of additional abilities and lore based content.  Both are balanced to be able to compete Heroic Realm against Heroic Realm or Heroic versus Epic.
Realms 3
Ok friends, if you dig Vikings and God Level combat in a skirmish game that looks flexible enough to give you lots of replay value, have a look at this project here as it just may be what you are looking for.

Boardgames in Blighty News – 20th Annual Mind Sports Olympiad to take place in London this August

For those of you who are competitive gamers, you time has come! Check out this press release about the 20th Annual Mind Sports Olympiad – a week of non-stop competition playing classic games and some very familiar games for board gamers. Here is your chance to become a World Champion! Errr… Diving Chess???

For the final week of August, Sunday 21st – Monday 29th, hundreds of board game enthusiasts will descend upon NW3 in London to take part in the 20th Annual Mind Sports Olympiad. Over the course of the week over 12 World Champions will be crowned and a host of other winners will get to add the title of Mind Sports Champion to their accolades.

The championship kicks off with a splash on August 14th with the Diving Chess World Championship at the Third Space Gym in Soho, London. Diving Chess is similar to normal chess with the exception that it is played in a swimming pool using a submerged chessboard. Each player can only plan their next move for the length that they can hold their breath. Once you’ve made a move and come up for air, your opponent must dive and stay under until they’ve decided their move, and then it’s your turn to dive again…

olympiad 2

The tournament features a range of games that test your mental agility, from familiar games such as chess and Monopoly to the cult classics of Settlers of Catan and Oware. There really is something for everyone and every level. The Championships even has a Learn to Play space where parents can bring their children to introduce them to new games. Other games include Poker, Chinese Chess, Shogi, Dominion, Cribbage, Scrabble, Bridge, Backgammon, Carcassonne, Agricola and even a Tetris competition (in battle mode on a Nintendo). Additional highlights include a Sudoku competition, the Eurogames World Championship, the Memory World Cup, and a lecture on how games can improve decision making in real life.

MIND SPORT OLYMPICS

The Olympiad’s popular Creative Thinking World Championship is returning again with new mind-bending questions and will be hosted by former British Chess Champion, William Hartston.

We would be delighted to welcome UK Gaming Media to cover the event and we can set up an interview with the chairman of the MSO, Etan Ilfeld, before and during the Championship.

Boardgames in Blighty Kickstarter News – Game of Blame is live!

Boardgames in Blighty Kickstarter News – Game of Blame is live!

I do like “take that” type games so let me bring to your attention Game of Blame by Richard Wolfrik, published by WarmAcre.

Game of Blame is described as a game about shirking your duty and as a cunning, confrontational card game for aspiring Tudors, Borgias and Lannisters. Charming eh?

This looks like a mean filler game which could indeed be good fun for those who enjoy “sticking it” to their friends. The theme appears to be fun and the art looks nice.

The price is certainly nice and the postage is EU, US, Canada and Aussie friendly which is always a plus.

If you think that “take that” games are fun,  check out Game of Blame here.

From the project –

The Queen is in a bad mood because the Realm is a total mess. Someone is going to pay – just make sure it isn’t you!

In this fast-paced card game for 2 to 4 players you raise the issues that will earn the Queen’s displeasure, then blame your friends. Cold-blooded betrayal has never been so much fun!
