Tell you what, if I lived in the Newcastle area, this would be a second home for sure! Check out the Kickstarter project!

Newcastle is getting its first board game cafe; the first and only of its kind in the city, Newcastle-upon-tyne. Here is the details from their press release…

Right now GameFé, the first board game cafe in Newcastle, is announcing that they are currently on Kickstarter. GameFé is an important new venture in Newcastle because it is bringing a new industry to the city. A board game cafe is a place for people to unplug from their cellphones and walk away from the internet, to sit down with live people and spend some time together.

We offer a space for people to grab a board game, sit down in a warm and welcoming place and play. And while our customers are having fun they are filling their bellies from our range of international BBQ – recipes learned in China and family recipes from Texas.

Our clientele is not just just the hard core gamer that spends their Saturday nights playing Dungeons and Dragons.

  • We appeal to families who want to share the fun they had a child is not dated but has only gotten better.
  • We also appeal to young couples looking for a new option for date night that is engaging, fun and different.
  • We appeal to Seniors who are looking for a new activity and meeting place.

GameFé is the first of its kind in many ways. No where else in the city does a cafe offer anywhere close to a selection of board games or encourage patrons to spend hours on end playing and having fun. GameFé also is unique for its creative range of BBQ, with menu options that many have not tried, much less thought of. Have you ever heard seen or tasted BBQ cantaloupe, broccoli, or grilled watermelon? We also have have a classic range of BBQ meats & vegetables.

GameFé isn’t only about board games. We also have a selection of card games, table top role playing games, and puzzles. We feature large tables for playing games, small tables specifically designed for trading card games like Magic or Pokémon. We will also have custom vegas style poker tables and a “Lego” table will feature a trough of legos that are open to play!

Our GameFé project is currently looking to the community for funding. Our venture is made for the community and we have to look to the community for help. Right now GameFé is on Kickstarter where anyone can donate to the project. Funding this project is through selecting a reward tier, like a £10 pledge will yield BBQ and Dessertt for 2 or a £25 pledge will get a donor BBQ, drinks, popcorn, and a free T-Shirt! Pledges go as high as £100 to sponsor games, platefuls of BBQ, and an invite to the kickoff party! And no matter at what level you donate, your name will be put up on the website and/or the wall of our cafe so everyone will have the chance to appreciate their contribution.

GameFé is coming to Newcastle and will be changing the face of board games in the North. Board games are not just for kids, but for everyone. Visit our Kickstarter and help us out today.

Victory & Glory: Napoleon

Don’t let the way overdone and horrible voice over on the video and the silly meeples put you off. Definitely worth a look anyway.

Victory & Glory: Napoleon is a board game of grand strategy and fast-play tactical battles, where one player will take the role of Napoleon Bonaparte and attempt to dominate the entire continent of Europe, while the other player controls Great Britain and the other allied nations and troops that comprise an ever-changing alliance bent on stopping Napoleon! Boardgames in Blighty Kickstarter News – Ragnar Brothers take a quantum leap with Nina & Pinta on Kickstarter

Boardgames in Blighty Kickstarter News – Ragnar Brothers take a quantum leap with Nina & Pinta on Kickstarter

My mates the Ragnar Brothers are at it a gain. This time they have created a large game and the first of their “Quantum” games.

New World exploration meets quantum physics! Not one but three New Worlds for your ships to sail to. More originality from the Ragnars.

This is a game of discovery and development where players send their Captains and Settlers to explore not one, but three, New Worlds – what might happen if neighbouring, parallel universes, separated by a gossamer barrier, should somehow be breached and my ship sails into your world and searches for gold in competition with your ship? Play the game and find out…Nina2

Yet again, these boys put a twist in their games and still bring out the historical feel. Worth checking out I’d say…

Here is the project –

Boardgames in Blighty news – Ragnar Brothers go exploring with Nina & Pinta

As you will have known from following my blog, I have a very strong preference for war games and American style games. Euro style games rarely figure on my radar but I do love history and if a Euro style game actually does the history effectively I am willing to give it a try. One of the only publishers that I think loves history and goes through the real effort to make their games properly historical is the Ragnar Brothers.

From Boardgamegeek:

This is a game of exploration of the New World where the great nations of Spain, England, France and Portugal send ships out to map the unknown and to bring home wealth to the Old World. This is a game where those ships will cross the divide and where no love is lost between Captains no matter which world it is! Explore, settle, fight if need be, and help your nation develop its Culture, Science, Religion and War-craft, to be the best in all worlds!

No dice rolling in this Ragnar game, but plenty of tension as players can launch offensives with their Captains after first using them to flip land tiles thereby exploring each New World. Settlers are placed in explored lands to generate gold revenue. When combinations of terrain are occupied, towns and cities can be built. Meanwhile gold is used in the Old World to buy items to benefit further New World development or to accumulate the victory points generated by Culture, Science, Religion and War which themselves are meshed with what is taking place in the three New Worlds.

This is a tightly knit puzzle that will have players pondering a multiplicity of decisions from start to finish. As much of the play is simultaneous and ‘single-action’ there is little down time. The game has a good sense of growth worthy of its fascinating them.

Game Contents:

1 giant, full colour, cloth map

1 storage triangle

35 die-cut land tiles

150+ wooden pieces

90+ die-cut counters

8 screens

Rules booklet in English and German

So I would think that all of you who want to play an interesting Euro style game with some good old conflict will want to jump on board when the project goes live next week. Meanwhile have a look at the artwork…

Boardgames in Blighty Kickstarter Spotlight – Check out Eternal Glory by Lewis Terry

Boardgames in Blighty Kickstarter Spotlight – Check out Eternal Glory by Lewis Terry

Welcome to a new paid promo feature here on Boardgames in Blighty – the Kickstarter Spotlight – where, for £10, I will be pointing at a project that I believe may be of interest. The stipulation is that – 1) I would definitely want to play the game and 2) I would potentially back it myself.

So it is great to start with a British project, I have to say as I want to support British projects which can help grow the British market.

Eternal Glory – a card game by Lewis Terry

This project has 26 days left to fund and is at 22% already.

The price for the core 53 card deck plus stretch goals is £10 plus postage. A nice price I would say. Kickstarter editions are going to be printed on linen card stock, which are very durable and hard wearing.

Here is the intro video from the Kickstarter project.

From the project page –

The last battle against the forces of darkness will be one that you won’t come back from. Being one of the mightiest warriors in the land it is time to prove your worth the only way you know how, in brutal bloody combat. In the frenzy of battle you will receive mortal blows but death can wait until after the battle. It is time to prove that you are the mightiest warrior that the world has ever seen; punch and cleave your way through the enemy forces and earn your mark in history.

Eternal Glory is a simple game to pick up but a greater depth comes with more plays. Hand management and timing are key elements to victory.

This is a card game which looks like it could be fun for families and for gamers looking for a short, competitive “take that” game.

The art is nicely done and I believe will attract a broad spectrum of ages. Here are some art samples to give you a flavour –

A 1-6 player tabletop surfing game. Choose a board, paddle out, and catch waves! Show your tricks and prove you’re the best surfer!

It’s nice to see something different in a competitive surfing game. EU friendly as well.
