Another ESSEN Preview from White Goblin Games – Rattus Africanus, the 2nd Rattus Expansion by Åse & Henrik Berg
Ok, Rattus fans, the 2nd expansion is almost here! I’ve had a look at the rules and can tell you that with Rattus Africanus, the Black Death spreads to the regions of North Africa. What’s more, there are rules for playing Rattus with up to 6 players.
The expansion comes with
– an additional board covering 5 regions of North Africa
– 4 class cards
– 51 region cards
– 40 cubes for the additional 2 players
– a Caravan piece
– 15 diplomat tokens
– 10 Move 3 steps tokens – Chivalry Cards used in 5 & 6 player games
– 65 Rat Tokens
The artwork by alexandre-roche.com looks great and in keeping with the original game. Nice mix of functionality and visual appeal.
These are used to help players survive the plague during the game, or, if they are retained until the end of the game, he may score a few additional points. Using region cards to avoid the plague: A player may, at any time when resolving the plague on any player’s turn (even just after a rat has been revealed), play a region card from his hand with a class symbol corresponding to a class card he holds.
The Islamic regions provide useful personalities that can help them out in various ways such as the Arabian Astronomer with more options to avoid the plague, the Caravaner and Explorer provide growth on the board and the Sultan who brings diplomat tokens onto the board which can gain players extra points.
Including the class cards from the base game, there are now 10 different class cards. However, in each game only some of these cards are used.
5-6 player rules
In each game only some of these cards are used. In a 2-4 player game, 6 class cards are used. In a 5-6 player game, 8 class cards should be used. With less than 6 players, some regions are not used, therefore some of the starting rat tokens will not be placed on the board.
At first look, Åse & Henrik Berg, design and White Goblin games looks to be a winner. It looks like there are some really nice additions here with Rattus Africanus. The expansion rules are easily understood and clear. The North Africa map and 5-6 player capability should certainly prove very interesting for my game group as we have wanted to play with more players. With new ways to earn victory points as well, the scope is broadened just enough but it seems like the playability is retained.
I’m looking forward to getting this to the table.
